Blackbird Foods “Blackbirdie” Pizza Minis promise a nostalgic pizza-roll-meets-personal-pizza experience with fully plant-based ingredients. We tried both classic flavors–cheese and pepperoni–to see if they delivered the crispy, cheesy comfort-food payoff we wanted.

Taste

The Classic Cheese flavor was the weaker of the two. The cheese had a custardy texture with a slight bitterness that didn’t quite work for us. The Pepperoni flavor was better thanks to the extra savory flavor from the pepperoni, but both versions still tasted a little heavy and doughy overall.

Price

The Pizza Minis are priced similarly to other premium vegan frozen snacks, though the value feels a little questionable given the texture issues. The pizzas are also much larger than the packaging suggests—about one-third larger than expected—which sounds like a positive until you realize how thick and doughy they are.

Texture

Texture was the biggest drawback here. The crust is very thick and bread-heavy, making the pizzas feel dense rather than crisp or snackable. The cheese filling also had an odd soft, almost custard-like consistency that didn’t quite work for us. Air frying helped a little, but not enough to fully fix the heaviness.

EV’s Take: Big on Dough, Light on Payoff

We really wanted to love Blackbird Foods “Blackbirdie” Pizza Minis because the concept is fun and nostalgic, and who doesn’t love a mini pizza? As you’ll read in our review, the execution didn’t quite land for us.

Blackbirdie pizza minis

The Pizza Minis are much larger and thicker than the box implies, which makes them surprisingly filling, but also overwhelmingly doughy. The Classic Cheese flavor struggled the most because the cheese texture was oddly soft and slightly bitter. The Pepperoni flavor worked better thanks to the extra seasoning and savory flavor from Beyond’s plant-based pepperoni slices, but even then, the overall experience still felt heavy.

That said, they aren’t terrible. If someone offered us a few at a party or movie night, we’d happily eat them. At $9 to $12 per box, we wouldn’t go out of our way to buy another box ourselves.

Blackbird Foods Pizza Minis Ingredients

The ingredient list varies slightly between flavors, but both use wheat-based dough and plant-based cheese alternatives. The Pepperoni version includes vegan pepperoni slices by Beyond for extra flavor and spice.

Both flavors contain wheat and may contain other common allergens depending on manufacturing conditions.

Nutrition

Like most frozen pizza snacks, these are more of a comfort-food treat than an everyday staple. They’re fairly filling thanks to the thick dough, but the heaviness can make a serving feel a bit dense.

It’s fairly high in sodium, containing about 26% of your recommended daily intake, which is a lot considering this is supposed to be a snack. It’s also very carb-forward, containing 40g per pizza mini. It is pizza, so that’s to be expected, but I also don’t find these very satisfying as a carb-forward snack because the dough is just so dense and doughy.

How to Cook Blackbird Foods Pizza Minis

We found the air fryer worked best for getting the exterior crisp enough to contrast the soft filling.

  • Air fryer: Cook at 400ºF until hot and browned around the edges. The box says 6 minutes, but I baked it for 8 minutes to get it a little more golden.
  • Oven: Bake at 450ºF for 8 to 9 minutes.

How Did EV Eat Them?

We tried both flavors straight from the air fryer. They might be better with your favorite plant-based ranch dressing!

Where Can I Buy Blackbird Foods Pizza Minis?

We found them at Sprouts via Instacart. They’re also available at Whole Foods and on Amazon. You can use the store locator on their website to find an online retailer or a brick-and-mortar retailer near you.
